Legislation
Legislation should benefit you, your family and your community. In the best sense, legislation defines the rules of conduct and engagement we've all agreed to live by. A fine balance is required. When that balance is disrupted, voters very sensibly use their power to right our ship of state so that government is aligned with the wishes of the public it serves.
Communities in West Virginia are reeling from the damage that's been done by recent federal tax cuts and roll backs in essential government services. As a simple matter of practical economics, all citizens should be guaranteed access to universal health care and insurance. At the same time government needs to rein in business excess, help the needy, protect the middle class, and reward corporations that create and keep jobs here in West Virginia.
Undocumented immigrants should be allowed to keep their jobs and eventually apply for legal status but the business owners who violate or exploit these workers should be severely fined, jailed or both.
It is my belief that government funding of abstinence-only sex education should be replaced with funding of more comprehensive sex education programs that include information on how to obtain and use condoms and other contraception. I am also opposed to any efforts to overturn Roe V. Wade.
Our prisons are overcrowded, understaffed, and dangerous. Pay for prison professionals needs to be increased. I believe first in rehabilitation of youth offenders over incarceration as a means to reduce crime, lower the exploding prison population and save money. I also support tougher gun control laws that keep citizens and children safe from harm.
